Function and space programme representing the food supply chain

The aim of this study is to prepare the basics for the construction and operation of a Vertical Farm in St. Pölten. With reference to three specific existing buildings, vertical farming concepts will be developed. As for these buildings – sanitation is needed, specific potentials are determined from a socio-economic and energetic perspective. The holistic approach of this exploration is supported by an intense involvement of the local population.

The result is an innovative building design for urban vertical food production. In addition to production, public or semi-public areas have been developed taking into account the wishes and needs of the population, which strengthen economic and social sustainability. The assumed reduction in energy consumption, both for the existing building and for the operation of the VF could be confirmed.

The study provides important bases for the next research steps on the one hand and the necessary basis for a possible demonstration project on the other hand.
